Ah, a stranger walks in our midst.  He’s lingering near, in the shadows of our thinking, just beyond our grip.  There’s a bit of bothersome tug, just enough to create feelings of something missing, something requiring us to search with the eyes of our hearts. Sometimes we become unwilling captives to this persistent intrusion.  Yet, in spite of the resonation, we experience a counter pull—just as though we had best escape while we can, for do we want a nagging conscience to press limits upon our own directions, to smother those dark fantasies of delight to delve into forbidden arias, to seek out the outermost expressions our lust demands?  After all, we must hold fast to the claims of our very own lordship.  Yes, are we not  the masters of our own directions, the destiny of our very own world whittled out by the rigid claims to our own rights and the determinations of our very own course, our stage to play to the world our own songs, our own drums, our very own beat as creations of our own hands and our own untarnished visions of our world staked out by our very own creations?

Yet, the whisperings never completely dip into silence as we stake our claims to just enough religion to keep us from feeling so guilty as to make us dread some unforeseen tragedy lurking in some unexpected turn of events.  Perhaps just a little insurance would appease our conscience and hold our god in a bond to come to our rescue in case our plans and efforts suddenly turn against us.  After all, just as long as we execute our foot pressure on the brakes to limit our actions that we may stop short of murder, revenge, the worst type of intrusions into the lives of others and such other outrageous resorts, we do earn points, do we not?  We keep our god placated and show him that we deserve his protection, right? 

In spite of all these precautions why do we keep finding ourselves needled by that unrelenting whisper tugging at us to turn to the true and Mighty God?

But just suppose some of us come to a deep valley of reality.  Just suppose our earnest desire presses us to acknowledge our own misgivings about all these smokescreens we have created in an effort to shield ourselves and promote some sense of justification for our resorts to valuing ourselves as center of the entire universe.

At that juncture, the expanding respect for truth prods us toward a venture, a venture that leads toward the shadowy mystery echoing with that voice calling to us, tugging at our hearts.  “Who are you, Lord?” we call, throwing caution to the wind, for by now we begin to care less about ourselves and desire to understanding the reality which lies beyond. 

“I am Jesus!” the authoritative voice returns.  “Why do you persecute Me?  You have now moved toward the truth; I am the TRUTH!  If you know Me, you will know the TRUTH, and the TRUTH will set you free.  You are turning from your own created world, the world of illusion and disillusionment, the world of darkness and uncertainty.  Come to Me and live.”

But wait!  Not everyone loves the truth.  Only those who love and surrender to the reality the truth uncovers will respond to that truth, especially THE TRUTH, the One Who reveals Himself, Jesus!  Unfortunately, there IS the other side of the coin.

Even many religions fit into that pattern of rejecting the true nature of reality and creating for themselves a shield by the counterfeit platform.  They steadfastly protect that platform, a sealed box to shut out all light except what they themselves arbitrarily call their own light.

Indeed, counterfeit religions abound, for such religions reflect the effort of humanity to discover God (or some value beyond the human plane).  Every one of the counterfeit religions grows from humanism, either as an effort to embellish the human spirit or to proclaim the human spirit the same as a god or even a part of God by some perspectives of pantheistic interpretations.

But enough speculating and reflecting upon what has occurred from time to time.  Let us intermingle and interact to discover for ourselves what positions and dispositions dictate the avenue people chose to take, whether to sweep from their own deep imaginations and shape some forms into a mental picture from which they gather a direction and call it the truth.  And why not?  There’s no one allowed near enough to threaten their affirmed enclosure, a box which creates the perimeter of their world—the world over which they themselves retain absolute control and worship the creations of their own hands.

As for example, Christ Himself encountered some of the religious officials with eyes that could penetrate the depths of the heart.  In spite of Christ’s bold reprimands, many of these Scribes and Pharisees continued to exhibit proudly their works. They would boast lavishly of their own perceived merits.  At the same time, these religious officials would strut in their own sophistication and arrogance.  By this unrelenting exercise they sought to control those people they considered beneath themselves, the commoners, whom they often looked down upon with pious and smug scorn.

The growing hostility toward Jesus by some of His contemporaries streamed from their resentment that Christ continuously destroyed their cover of darkness and exposed them to the revealing truth, humiliating them beyond endurance.  Their jealous hatred festered into efforts to expose Christ as a charlatan by entrapping Him, only to meet the unwavering truth turned back upon them by Jesus to open again their wounds of humiliation before the crowds whom they had always tried to impress.  There can be little wonder that Christ’s embittered enemies began to plot His death.

Before we relegate this story to history and bury it there with indifference, the same strife takes on modern garments to exercise hostility toward the God of the universe, the God Who demands a righteous response from His creation, the creatures into whom He has breathed life, but these modern day  scribes and Pharisees, the humanistic and materialistic counterparts, wage an unrelenting war against Christianity, seeking to silence them through the fairness doctrine, hate crimes and legalization of so-called same sex marriage!

But, really, we can listen with our ears.  We catch the political express as it rumbles through the halls of Congress and the White House with philosophical austerity breeding threatening overtures toward those who would even fail to embrace their “we, the government know what you need and what is best for you whether you’re too stupid to see it or not.  Don’t dare resist; we’ll do all your thinking and decision making; all you need do is surrender unconditionally to us and let us, the government, supply your needs according to our much deeper and unquestionable judgments!   That way we will not need to bring the heavy penalties against you or your families.  We can all live in peace as long as everyone will allow the government to decide what each one needs and informs each one how the government will meet all needs, even needs each knows nothing about.”  They continue the fire of their hostilities through Homeland Security by classifying Christian Conservative groups, the pro-life activists, veterans, etc., as terrorists extremists who pose a real security risk.  Because of this perceived security risk the Homeland Security dismisses the constitutional provisions against unreasonable search and seizure.  We would suppose Christians to be a threat against a nation’s diabolical schemes through promoting protection of human life, the peace and joy of right relationship to God, human rights to religious freedom, free speech, the right to disagree peacefully with the government and to carry on a dialogue with anyone, including the government, the right to express grievances in a peaceful and orderly fashion, etc., etc.  Yes, those Christians indeed prove themselves to be a threat against duplicitous, underhanded, unconscionable deception, against truth as absolute, against evidence countering their untenable claims, etc.!!!

But really, what about religious liberty and freedom of speech?  “Oh, the government guarantees these rights without doubt, just as long as such speech and religious practices do not claim exclusivity and will show complete tolerance toward all other religions and practices.”  Within this declaration, the current administration intends to include Christianity under the classification of religion; however, in the strictest and truest sense, Christianity goes far beyond religion and becomes defined as a relationship with God!

In other words, the government will support liberty for the government’s official religion which allows no exclusivity and no intolerance?  “So that peace and tranquility can be achieved and everyone can live together without conflict, the government must disallow rebel rousers that can stir up conflicts leading toward acts of terror, as with the bombing of abortion clinics and impeding the rights of women to chose for themselves whether to have an abortion or not.”

The government must allow absolutely no dissension, no uncontrolled ideology, and no creativity without the approval of the government?  “To keep everyone moving toward the good of society as a whole and blocking innovations that could lead to divisions and weaken the government, the government must secure the proper course toward peace and progress.  Whether the common people can see it or not, the fact is, the end does justify the means!”

Can this justify the enforcement of a ban on conscience exclusion for refusing to perform abortions or other violations of conscience?  “The people cannot be allowed to rule the government.  They have no expertise to do so.  Conscience must be trained by those in control and the people must submit for their own good and the good of society as a whole.  No more free interchanges of ideas that can cause dissensions, irrespective of conscience or anything else.”

Can this then be the end of our democracy and the total eradication of the United States Constitution?  “No.  Absolutely not.  The Constitution is a living document to take on the meaning each generation desires to give it and we can also call our government a democracy without adhering to the outmoded definition others may try to give it.  We as the government can effectively redefine anything we choose.”

Of course, this conversation has never taken place; yet, such a portrayal reflects the driving attitudes and dispositions evident in the political and philosophical mechanism driving our country into the great abyss of restriction and control of all citizens, the terror of dictatorship under a socialist regime! 

As bleak and incredulous as this may seem, the reality of what’s going on in our nation can scarcely lead to any other conclusion.  However, to concede defeat does not recognize the true power and authority of God.  Governments may rule, but God overrules.  Christians can be and often are the target for suffering and intended destruction, but our true hope remains in the God we serve and rest in the assurance that He directs history.  It is more than probable that judgment is already operative against this nation that has gone the way of Adolf Hitler’s Germany.  More than six million Jewish people suffered tremendously before succumbing to death under the black terror of the Nazi regime.

Does our nation condemn what the Germans did?  Absolutely!  Yet, we have turned around and tortured (dismembered) and murdered some fifty million unborn children in our abortion clinics!  This should be enough for everybody to fall face down before God to seek His forgiveness in bitter repentance!

Let every Christian fight, but only as God’s Spirit speaks through each one to lift up Jesus that His light may penetrate and rejuvenate our destitute land.  Pray for our government and the officials for a genuine conversion.  God is able!
